Road Skills
The BMW Rider Training school is unique within the industry.
We are the sole partners to BMW to operate as a motorcycle training school. The BMW badge is synonymous with quality and so is the BMW rider training school. We have a huge customer base who travel to us from around the world!
We consider that we have the best facilities of any motorcycle rider training school in the UK. The school is housed in a modern building with classroom, lounge, changing rooms, kitchen and toilet facilities as well as the garage for the bikes. No drafty porta-cabins on a school yard, or bike parked in some-ones back garden with us.
Next to our premises is our purpose built training arena which can be directly accessed from the main building. This is not shared with a school or a car park we rent on quiet days. It is exclusively our and this allows greater flexibility in training dates compared to schools that rent or borrow school yards or car parks for odd days or weekends.
NEW FOR 2015
DAS / A2 Unlimited Pay one single fee for your training and receive as much guidance as is required until you pass
Free A2 to DAS upgrade All A2 customers are invited back to take their tests for the upgrade to the unrestricted licence free of charge
Getting your Motorcycle Licence is only a matter of four easy steps and we can help you through it all, making it a simple and straight forward process.
*You can do your Theory Test after your CBT because there is no technical requirement to do the Theory Test first, but for our courses, if your CBT is included in the Course, you must have already passed the Motorcycle Theory Test first.
1) Motorcycle Theory Test training
The Motorcycle Theory Test is made up of a multiple-choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. The motorcycle multiple-choice part lasts for 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. For the hazard perception part, you’ll then be shown a series of 14 video clips on a computer screen, featuring everyday road scenes that contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips will feature 2 ‘developing hazards’ and you will need to identify them. The pass mark for cars and motorcycles is 44 out of 75. You will be given the results of your theory tests at the test centre after taking it.
When you come to train on an A2 or Direct Access Course with us, you must have already passed your Motorcycle Theory Test. You can book your theory test online at a test centre local to you.
You can also practice the motorcycle theory test online. Why not try it out to see if you are well prepared? Click here.
We can also provide you with theory test material. Once you’ve booked your course, just request this to be sent out to you and if you have any problems or need questions answering about the theory test, one of our instructors will be available to chat to you.
(Remember! A Motorcycle Theory Test is different to a Car Theory Test. Everyone needs to pass the separate Motorcycle Theory Test, before they take their Practical Test)
2) CBT
We can offer you a Direct Access Course to include the CBT (if you do not hold one already) or without a CBT (if you already hold a valid CBT).
3) Practical DVSA Module 1 & Module 2 Test
We operate the A2 & Direct Access Courses on an intensive basis and they are dovetailed into the practical DVSA Motorcycle Tests. When you book your course with us, we automatically hold DVSA Practical Test dates for you as an integral part of your Course. You do not need to book them separately.
REMEMBER!
Ensure you have valid documents before booking a course.
As of January 2013, obtaining a full unrestricted licence for riders aged below 24 has become a longer and more expensive process. Riders aged 19-23 are restricted to take their test on a new A2 category motorcycle producing no more than 46bhp and after passing their test are able to ride A2-approved motorcycles indefinitely.
However if they wish to upgrade to a full power motorcycle aged 24 (or after 2 years on an A2 licence, whichever is sooner) then they are required to pass another identical two-part Direct Access test on a suitable bike.
As part of our commitment to better motorcycling, BMW Rider Training is the first and only rider training school in the UK offering customers who take the A2 test with us a complimentary full licence upgrade when they are legally able to take it. We have young dedicated staff and will provide any required additional training, motorcycle hire and the Direct Access Module One and Module Two tests. Customers will only be required to cover the cost of travel to and from BMW Rider Training.
At BMW Rider Training, we believe in you completing your training on an intensive basis and so offer courses based on number of days. This allows you to take best advantage of the learning process, enables us to provide a continuity of instructor and it really immerses you in the world of motorcycling. It also has the advantage of your training not being protracted over many weeks, often resulting in a two steps forward, one step back.
7 Day Course
The perfect course for the beginner or the new rider who is limited in motorcycle exposure or concerned regarding the skills required in learning to ride
6 Day Course
Best for riders who hold a valid CBT certificate using a geared bike, which was taken very recently or someone who has ridden geared motorcycles extensively in the past.
Please note
5 Day Course
Best for riders who hold a valid CBT and have been able to practice their riding, since achieving their CBT. Your riding must have been on a geared bike (not a scooter). You must be skilled and confident enough to be able to upgrade to a larger bike on Day One of your Course
4 Day Course
A fast paced course for someone who already holds a CBT and rides a geared bike frequently (every week) since achieving your CBT. You may have already ridden some larger bikes off road, or overseas, or compete in endurance or motocross. You must be skilled and confident enough to be able to upgrade to a larger bike on Day One of your Course.
A Typical Day
Your training days will start at 8.30am and finish around 4pm. Each day will have around 7 hours of training with a combination of all or some:
We build in breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon and there is time for lunch. Please remember to bring some money with you, as if we are out training on the road we will stop at cafés for drinks and something to eat.
A typical course will follow this type of structure:
If you come to us and do not have a CBT, we will include this as the first part of the course and you will normally achieve this standard within 1 – 2 days. If you do take longer than this, then we will discuss your options with you at that stage.
Once you demonstrate competent and confident ability on the 125cc machine on the road, your Instructor will upgrade you to a BMW F 700 GS (provided you are over the age of 24 years) or G650 GS for those aged 19 - 23.
On the larger bike you will practice the manoeuvres for Module 1 and we book practice sessions at the DVSA Test Centre beforehand to orientate you and so you understand what to expect.
You will also continue to practice on road, under the radio supervision of your Instructor, encountering all typical traffic situations, in preparation for your Module 2 Test.
Your Practical Tests are normally held on the final day of your course; sometimes you Module 1 Test will be taken the day before, with your Module 2 Test on the final day.
You can only take Module 2 Test if you have passed your Module 1 Test first. If you want to see more about the Practical Motorcycle Tests, you can access the DVSA Official Videos on YouTube. Select Motorcycle Test for their Playlist.
New for 2015, we are offering the industry-leading A2/DAS Unlimited course. Customers can opt to choose this premium package instead of the seven-day A2/DAS course and will be given as much training and as many sittings of the Module One and Two tests as it takes for them to pass - All covered by a one-off fee!
Anyone who thinks they mad need more time to learn can choose A2/DAS Unlimited in the knowledge that as long as it takes for you to pass your test, BMW Rider Training will be with you every step of the way and there will be no extra costs for training, motorcycle hire or test fees to worry about.
There's no fine print or hidden charges. You can trust the BMW Rider Training promise that, if you choose A2/DAS Unlimited, we will train you until you pass and it won't cost you a penny more than our £1795 upfront course charge
If you are starting the course needing a CBT, you’ll train in the beginning on a 125cc machine. Once competent you will be upgraded to a larger bike. The type of bike will depend on your age.
If you are over 24 years, you will use the BMW F 700 GS. Taking your practical motorcycle tests on this bike and passing means you become a full motorcycle licence holder, qualified to ride any size bike. You will receive a Category A Licence.
F 700 GS - Ideal all-round machine within the GS family, suitable for every kind of rider – no matter how experienced.
If you are over the age of 19 but under the age of 24, you will use the BMW G 650 GS. Taking your practical motorcycle tests on this bike and passing means you become a full motorcycle licence holder, qualified to ride any bike up to 46bph (35kW). You will receive a Category A2 Licence. Once you have held this for two years or you reach 24 years old, in order to then move to a Category A Licence, you will need to take your test again, using the BMW F 700 GS.
G 650 GS - Provides levels of performance, smoothness and economy that have never been produced before by a single cylinder engine.
If you are under 19 years old, please call us to discuss your options on 08000 131 282.
Your eyesight will be tested and you must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres
A2 & Direct Access training dates are set according to the availability of Modular 1 and 2 tests with the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency. Typically we run 2 to 3 courses per week with test dates on Thursdays or Fridays. However this can vary.
