Motorcycles are an infinitely rewarding passion and pastime where the more you put in, the more you get out. Taking the decision to improve your riding will make you more confident, safer and better equipped to deal with - and fully enjoy – the things that the world's roads can throw at us. BMW Road Skills courses help you build on the skills you've been using since you gained your licence, equipping you with a range of techniques that cover everything from machine control to road positioning, observation and overtaking.

Advanced courses introduce a number of advanced riding techniques, which are passed on to you by some of the most experienced instructors in the UK. All of our tutors are either RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle Instructors, RoSPA Examiners or serving police riders. The benefits and wisdom of the millions of miles they've covered will be passed on to you during friendly, enjoyable two and three day riding courses.

We have four differing advanced courses. These are:

  • 1 day introduction to Road Skills
  • Road Skills Level 1
  • Road Skills Level 2
  • Road Skills Level 3

New for 2016

This 1 day course is conducted at a ratio of 2 customers to 1 instructor and is intended to be an introduction to the concepts of advanced riding.

The day comprises of:

  • A theory session introducing the 'System of Motorcycle Control'
  • Further discussion regarding bends
  • A short session on slow speed skills
  • An assessment ride to lunch
  • Then the afternoon is spent on focus on items highlighted during the assessment ride

The day finishes with a full discussion and you are sent away with items to focus on and grow with.

This two-day course is aimed at those who have had a long break from riding or those who are new to motorcycling and want to improve their current skill set. The course is structured to provide a thorough familiarisation with the motorcycle you’ll be riding, together with practical lessons on our private training facility and theory sessions within our classroom. We will then move onto the road where you will experience a varied range of conditions and environments under the guidance of your instructor.

At the end of this course, you will have more confidence in your riding ability and a safe riding skill set to apply to your motorcycling.

What will it cover?

  • Theory refresher session
  • Familiarisation with motorcycles and their controls
  • Key motorcycle safety checks
  • Basic road positioning, distance and hazard perception
  • Correct use of gears and brakes
  • Fundamentals of defensive ridingSlow control and manoeuvring exercises

This three-day course is designed to improve the ability of those who ride regularly, but may not cover many miles each year, or for those who may have developed bad habits. It’s ideal for riders looking to be more stable at slow speeds, more assertive when overtaking, smoother during cornering and more confident moving their bike around when performing checks and routine maintenance. With a few simple and well-practiced techniques, we can help you make significant improvements to your abilities.

At the end of this course you’ll be armed with a new set of skills and techniques, giving a noticeable improvement in how smooth your riding is.

What will it cover?

  • Full instructor assessment of your current skill level
  • Recap of basic road riding manoeuvres and skills
  • Theory sessions to introduce advanced riding techniques
  • Use of counter-steering to improve smoothness
  • Reading corners, using correct gears and road positioning
  • How to assess and execute a safe and assertive overtake

This three-day course is designed for more experienced riders who have a basic understanding of advanced riding techniques. The course is also ideal for IAM qualified individuals who wish to take their riding to the next level.

At the end of this course, we aim to bring your riding standard up to the level of a RoSPA pass, the highest civilian advanced motorcycle qualification in the UK.

What will it cover?

  • Classroom theory sessions using ‘Roadcraft – The Police Riders Handbook’
  • Observation skills, forward planning and hazard perception • Consistent and appropriate use of position, gears, braking and speed in all types of road conditions
